Abstract:  We will explore the basic ideas of the representation theory of the symmetric groups and its connection with combinatorics and Young diagrams. The relationship between representations of the alternating group and the symmetric group will be discussed. In particular the representations whose degree is relatively prime to (a given prime) p will be discusssed.

Refreshments will be served.
