About us

The Stevens Society of Mathematicians (SSM) is an organization devoted to disseminating "post-classroom" mathematics to the Stevens community and the greater scientific and mathematical community. We are an active student chapter of SIAM, the Society for Industrial and Applied Mathematics. Some of our activities include:

• Weekly talks.
  Many Thursdays one of the members or an invited guest gives a talk on a topic of particular interest to them. The talks are typically scheduled for 2:00 PM in the Mathematics Department, and coffee and cookies are provided.
  • Schedules are available for past talks and talks coming up for our current semester.
  • If you'd like, you can sign up for the SSM mailing list to receive pre-talk notices.
  • If you have an idea for a talk you'd like to give yourself, please contact one of our officers to arrange it.

• Tea and Mathematics.
  Many non-talk weekdays, members of the SSM and Mathematics Department still gather at 3:00 PM to have a cup of tea or coffee and talk shop. Tea and Mathematics is usually served in the lounge of the Mathematics Department, Kidde 104.

• Thursday soccer.
  This semester we also gather together to play soccer every Thursday from 11:00 AM to 1:00 PM.

• Graduate Studnet Research Conference.
  The SSM co-organizes the annual Graduate Student Research Conference (GSRC, formerly ISSA conference). The conference gathers together the graduate students from the departments making up the Charles V. Schaefer, Jr. School of Engineering & Sciences. Here graduate students can learn what their peers in other departments are researching and discuss issues of importance to themselves and the school. This year the conference is on October 1st.
