Barotropic meandering jet.Lobe dynamics in a numerical model of a barotropic jet on the beta-plane. Stable and unstable manifolds are calculated over an interval of time which covers several periods of as measured by the dominant time period in the vector field. The resulting lobes provide a geometric description of the exchange of fluid between the cat's-eye region with circulating fluid motion, the core of the jet with prograde motion, and the ambient fluid outside the jet with retrograde motion.
