Automatic Groups and String Rewriting Proc. of the Ecole de Printemps d'Informatique Theorique, Font Romeu, May 17-21, 1993, Springer Lecture Notes in Comp. Sci. 1995. In recent years developments in geometric topology have led to a remarkable interplay between group theory, geometry, and the theory of automata and formal languages. One of the best known result of this interplay has been the introduction of automatic groups. In this article we will consider this class of groups from the point of view of automata and language theory. We will see how work of Epstein, Holt and Rees puts automatic groups naturally into the context of string rewriting.
